ISARIC: International Severe Acute Respiratory and emerging Infection Consortium

ISARIC

The International Severe Acute Respiratory and emerging Infection Consortium (ISARIC) is a global consortium comprising investigator-led clinical research networks. With participation from over 60 member networks and numerous international partners, ISARIC is dedicated to conducting high-quality clinical research aimed at improving patient care and supporting a timely, coordinated global response to infectious disease threats. For more than a decade, ISARIC has generated robust, clinically relevant evidence across a broad spectrum of diseases, including COVID-19, dengue, Ebola, Lassa fever, Nipah, mpox, and the bubonic plague.

The Oxford Research Software Engineering (OxRSE) group plays a key role in supporting ISARIC’s digital infrastructure and data management capabilities. The OxRSE group contributes to the development of scalable and efficient data pipelines, with a strong emphasis on data standardisation and schema design to ensure consistency and interoperability across studies. The group has also been instrumental in aligning ISARIC’s data structures with the FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) standard, facilitating better integration with global health data ecosystems.

To increase efficiency in data transformation, the OxRSE group is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) to build semi-automated data transformation pipelines, incorporating human-in-the-loop approaches to maintain data quality. In addition, the OxRSE group supports the deployment of ISARIC projects to Amazon Web Services (AWS).
